About JLR

JLR designs and builds premium vehicles and is midway through a shift to electric and software-defined platforms. That transition has changed who it hires — electrical, battery and software people now sit alongside traditional mechanical engineers.

Gaydon is the engineering centre; Solihull and Halewood are manufacturing. Apprenticeships exist on both the technical and the manufacturing side.

It runs one of the largest structured early-careers programmes in UK automotive, with cohorts big enough that you start with a ready-made peer group.

The industry is cyclical, and JLR has had volatile years. Training quality is high, but treat automotive as a sector with real ups and downs.

Why work here

  • Cohort-based intakes mean strong peer support and formal mentoring from day one.
  • You can touch a physical product — prototypes, test tracks, build lines — which very few software-first employers offer.
  • Big investment in battery and vehicle software skills, funded through internal academies.
  • Manufacturing sites run shifts, and engineering roles can involve pressured launch periods.

Application tips

  1. 1.Show hands-on interest: karting, motorsport clubs, Formula Student, car maintenance. It is genuinely differentiating here.
  2. 2.Explain why electrification interests you — they are actively screening for people who want the new platform, not the old one.
  3. 3.Apply early in the autumn; apprenticeship places at Solihull fill fastest.
  4. 4.Assessment days use group build tasks. Contribute and also visibly listen — assessors mark collaboration.
  5. 5.Be flexible across sites; naming only Gaydon narrows your odds considerably.
