Why STEM education?
The STEM program is designed to prepare students for 21st Century careers. Students must be well grounded in skills such as problem-solving and critical thinking. Through the STEM model, students apply the principles of mathematics and science and use technology to accelerate ideas, all in a collaborative effort to imagine and create innovative solutions to real world problems. At STEM Launch, we believe students must be empowered to develop the skills that allow them to go beyond the status quo.
What is Problem Based Learning (PBL)?
Through Problem Based Learning (PBL), students engage in inquiry and collaboration to create solutions to authentic problems, such as a bridge collapse or increasing warning times for natural disasters. Each problem is examined through various lenses, including, but not limited to, science, technology, engineering and math in order to create solutions that benefit humanity. Industry partners serve as mentors, bringing relevance to students’ work and serving on panels to review students’ accomplishments.
All good teams have a uniform, and we are a team at STEM Launch. Uniforms help us build and establish a strong sense of community. Students will need to wear uniforms when they attend technology and engineering competitions.
What do we wear?
- Khaki (tan) pants, shorts or skirts
- A STEM polo or T-shirt
- Comfortable shoes such as tennis shoes
- Students need to wear their polo shirts for PBL, competitions, presentations, and field trips.
- On Fridays, students may wear jeans and a STEM T-shirt.
What time will school start and end?
Unless there are unforseen circumstances, school will begin at 8:15am and end at 3:25pm. On Wednesdays, school will start at8:15am and will end at 1:55pm.
Will transportation be provided?
Bus Transportation will NOT be provided to and from STEM Launch. However, we are partnering with RideArrangers to assist families who are interested in carpooling, walking or biking to and from school. RideArrangers is a program of the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) that has been helping families in the region for nearly 20 years. Last year RideArrangers assisted nearly 70 schools and helped form more than 3,500 school-related carpools. We will update our website as soon as more information becomes available.
What are the benefits of a K-8?
In addition to diminishing the transition anxieties that typically occur between elementary and middle school, a major benefit of a K-8 school is that students will be able to collaborate and communicate across nine grade levels. First graders have the potential to see themselves as teachers and leaders when they present to sixth graders just as seventh graders act as mentors when they design specific learning activities to use with second graders. STEM Launch is a community of learners who recognize and utilize experts of EVERY age inside our building, community, and the world at large. Through this model, students work together to develop their leadership and collaboration skills, compassion, and confidence from Kindergarten through eighth grade.
Will my student receiving special education services still be able to receive those services at STEM Launch?
Yes, all special education and ELL services will continue at STEM Launch. Special Education students who attended Niver Creek will be able to stay at STEM Launch in their current program with no interruption to services.
What are the benefits of STEM Lab vs. STEM Launch?
STEM Education will benefit Adams 12 students by providing high quality STEM programming and curriculum to both locations. The schools will be identical in curriculum and instructional foundations and offer diverse, engaging opportunities for all students. STEM Lab and STEM Launch will be sister schools.
Is there any testing requirement for students to apply to STEM Lab or STEM Launch?
No, there are testing requirements or admissions requirements other than following the district choice policy. STEM education is for all students and all students are welcome to apply.
The STEM student may:
- Like to read and write about nonfiction topics; such as nature, earth sciences, technology, social studies, etc.
- Like to design, create, and build things.
- Like to communicate through designing, diagramming, drawing, discussing and writing.
- Have an affinity towards animals.
- Be Interested in the who, how, and why of sciences.
- Like to collect and classify items like; rocks, shells, leaves, bugs, etc.
- Enjoy taking things apart.
- Construct items from everyday objects like; tape, paper, rubber bands, paper clips, cotton ball, cardboard, etc.
